Psychosocial Support Assistant

Location: Based in Buea with frequent travel to other parts of the South West Region

Contract type:
National Fixed Term contract

Start date: 29th December 2020


Overall purpose of the role

To implement psychosocial support activities, including psychological first aid, referrals to service providers follow up support and provision of material assistance. In collecting information on individuals in need of psychosocial support, the PSS Officer will always ensure compliance with the DRC Information Sharing Protocol.

Main responsibilities

Programme Implementation
  • Identify and register cases of any member of the community who faces protection risks, according to DRC’s criteria and consents to DRC services, noting down all information and ensuring confidentiality and informed consent
  • Fill in the appropriate forms and use the psychosocial support tools, as per the guidance of the PSS Officer
  • In coordination with the individual/family, assess the issues faced and where referrals to other services would be appropriate
  • If consented to by the individual, accompany them to the service provider to ensure smooth referral system
  • Provide psychological first aid directly to individuals who are particularly vulnerable in the community
  • In coordination with the individual/family and the PSS officer, determine if material support is appropriate and deliver material support to the individual
  • In coordination with the PSS Officer, devise a schedule for follow up of the case, to be agreed with the individual/family
  • Perform any other relevant tasks as requested by the Line Manager (Protection Manager/Coordinator)
  • Keep accurate records of daily activities, beneficiaries involved, and issues identified. Regularly update databases according to DRC procedures
  • Contribute to the preparation of monthly work plans in accordance with project objectives and outputs
  • Contribute to the preparation and timely submission of all reports and updates to donors, partners, DRC office and other interested stakeholders where appropriate
  • Maintain the relationship between the community / the beneficiaries and the organisation
  • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders in the field as appropriate to ensure a smooth implementation of activities
  • Proactively participate in regular program meetings and provide updates as appropriate
  • Ensure close coordination and communication with other elements of DRC program to encourage an integrated approach to program delivery
  • Support with translation and interpretation tasks when necessary
  • Ensure adherence to DRC’s national staff policy guidelines
  • Always comply with DRC’s Code of Conduct
  • Support in induction process for new staff where relevant
Required experience and competencies
  • Social Work studies or professional training in social work
  • Strong personal skills in dealing with members of the community
  • Knowledge and expertise in social work desirable
  • Must have at least 2 years working experience in (Social Work or psycho-social support)
  • Facilitation skills
  • Reporting Skills
  • Computer literacy (Excel, Word, Office Package)
  • Application & fluency in English (must) and French (desirable)
Functional Skills:
  • Teamwork
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with analytical approach
  • Must be able to work independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to strictly adhere to deadlines
  • Readiness to sign and abide to a Child protection policy
  • Readiness to commit and adhere to values, mission, and vision of DRC

BSc in Social Works Psychology, Social Science or any related field.

Knowledge of context: Minimum 10 years working / studying / living in South West or North West Cameroon. Applications that do not demonstrate this will not be considered.
