Top 10 skills to master on the 21st-century to have a successful career  

What skills will you need to succeed in the future? The world is constantly changing and we  are living in a modern era of a fast-paced development. In this millennial age, the 21st century, many jobbers struggle hard to keep their job positions and look for promotions in their workplaces. This is primarily due to the fact that this generation presents a few challenges which make it difficult for people with less-developed skills to cope. 
21st century skills comprise skills, abilities, and learning dispositions that have been identified as being required for success. This is part of a growing international movement focusing on the skills required for students and professionals to master in preparation for success in a rapidly changing, digital society. 

These skills can be classified into 03 categories:
  • Learning Skills 
  • Literacy Skills
  • Life Skills

1. Learning Skills 

This is a term that describes the tasks involved in learning, including time management, note-taking, reading effectively, study skills, and writing tests. More educators know about these skills because they’re universal needs for any career.

  • Critical thinking
Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.
In short, it’s what helps students figure stuff out for themselves when they don’t have a teacher at their disposal.

  • Creativity
Creativity is equally important as a means of adaptation. This skill empowers students to see concepts in a different light, which leads to innovation. Creativity is the ability to develop and express ourselves and our ideas in new ways. Creativity is going beyond the usual - stepping outside of the box.

  • Collaboration
Collaboration is the process of two or more people, entities or organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal.
This means getting to work together, achieve compromises, and get the best possible results from solving a problem.Collaboration may be the most difficult concept in the four C’s. But once it’s mastered, it can bring impressive results.
  • Communication
Communication is the act of conveying meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic rules. This is the potential to eliminate confusion in a workplace, which makes your students/professionals valuable parts of their teams, departments, and companies. Being able to communicate effectively is one of the most important learning skills. Those with good interpersonal skills are strong verbal and non-verbal communicators and are often considered to be “good with people”. to learn.


2. Literacy Skills

Literacy skills are all the skills needed for reading and writing. They include such things as awareness of the sounds of language, awareness of print, and the relationship between letters and sounds. Literacy skills help students gain knowledge through reading as well as using media and technology.
 They include: 
  • Information literacy: Understanding facts, figures, statistics, and data
  • Media literacy: Understanding the methods and outlets in which information is published
  • Technology literacy: Understanding the machines that make the Information Age possible

3. Life Skills

Life skills is a term used to describe a set of basic skills acquired through learning and/or direct life experience that enable individuals and groups to effectively handle issues and problems commonly encountered in daily life.

They include; 

Flexibility: Deviating from plans as needed
Leadership: Motivating a team to accomplish a goal
Initiative: Starting projects, strategies, and plans on one’s own
Productivity: Maintaining efficiency in an age of distractions
Social skills: Meeting and networking with others for mutual benefit


If you genuinely want to have what it takes to become a successful worker in the 21st century, the skills discussed above are what you need to acquire. However, it goes beyond mere acquisition you’ve got to, from time to time, improve on it. That is how you can become a well sought-after and effective worker in this 21st century.
