Call for applications: Training in remote sensing for forest cover moitoring at CRESA Foret-Bois

Call for applications: Training in remote sensing for forest cover moitoring at CRESA Foret-Bois

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS :
Training in Remote Sensing for forest cover monitoring From April 13 to 19, 2021 at CRESA Forêt-Bois

What is remote sensing ?

It is the set of techniques that allow, the acquisition of images, to obtain information on the earth's surface (including the atmosphere and oceans), without direct contact with it. Remote sensing encompasses the entire process of capturing and recording the energy of emitted or reflected electromagnetic radiation, processing and analyzing the information it represents, and then applying this information in decision-making processes.

Why monitor the forests ?

Deforestation and forest degradation accounted for about 15% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions between 1997 and 2006 (Van der Werf, 2019). As the drivers and intensity of deforestation and forest degradation vary by region (Kissinger G, 2012), the impacts of forest loss and degradation can be felt at all scales. The degradation of forest cover over several decades has led to problems such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, the advance of the dessert. Urgent and decisive action to curb the scale of deforestation and forest degradation, promote the enhancement of carbon stocks through regeneration and reforestation, and account for CO2 sources and sinks are therefore paramount. Therefore, the development of remote sensing skills to effectively monitor the evolution of forest cover and assess changes are crucial and offer multiple opportunities to date.

 Who organizes the training ?

The Centre de Recherche d'Enseignement Spécialisé en Agriculture (CRESA Forêt-Bois), created in 1997, is a regional vocational training school that trains learners from various backgrounds (national and international) in fields related to natural resource management, land use planning, forest management, climate change, etc. This training in remote sensing aims to introduce learners to the concepts of remote sensing and its application in monitoring forest cover change through hands-on training using open source software.

Who can attend the training ?

The training is open to professionals, students, researchers working in a wide range of fields. People for whom the training would be of professional use can also subscribe to the training.

What's in it for me ?

 At the end of the training, learners will have familiarized themselves with the theoretical notions related to remote sensing and will gain practical experience on satellite image analysis, forest stratification, assessment of forest cover change and map assembly.

What are the axes of the training ?

This training will cover the following topics:
  • Introduce the principles and foundations of remote sensing
  • Explore the different sources of satellite image acquisition (free and paying)
  • Proceed to the photo-interpretation of the images
  • Perform digital image processing over two periods of time
  • Assess changes in forest cover including analysis of statistical data related to these changes.
  • Produce thematic maps

When and at what time will the training take place ?

The training will take place between April 13 and 19, 2021 at CRESA Forêt-Bois (Nkolbisson), starting at 8 a.m. and should end by 5 p.m. at the latest.

What are the practical arrangements ?

Participants must :
Send a cover letter and their CV in PDF format by E-mail with subject SIGCRESA21 to [email protected] with a copy to [email protected] before April 08, 2021.

The selected candidates will be contacted by email 02 days after the closing date of the call for applications ;
  • Pay the training fees of 50 000 FCFA (Fifty thousand CFA Franc), from the first day of the training. These fees will be allocated to the training room, the data set, the practical training, the course material, the coffee break and the training certificate ;
  • A laptop computer with at least 3 Giga Ram ;
  • Obtaining the certificate is sanctioned by the candidate's participation in all training courses. In case of absence to more than 02 training sessions, the certificate will not be awarded to the said candidate.

Who to contact for more information ?

For any additional information, please address your questions to one of the above E-mail addresses.

NB : Should the candidate be unable to attend the training due to unavoidable circumstances after payment of the training fees, CRESA will not reimburse the training fees, nor will it organize a remedial session. Furthermore, all ANTI COVID measures prescribed by the Government of Cameroon will be scrupulously respected during this training. To this effect, candidates will have to carry the hydroalcoholic gel and personal nose mask throughout the training.
