Call for Applications: Training on the use of GIS in Forest Management in Cameroon

What is forest management?

Forest management is defined in Cameroon as the planning, implementation and monitoring-evaluation in space and time in harmony with other land uses with a view to achieving one or more clearly defined  objectives concerning the sustained production of forest goods and services of all kinds, without undermining the intrinsic value of the forests or compromising their future productivity, without causing undesirable effects on the physical and social environment, in compliance with the laws and regulations in force. It is therefore essential to model forestry activities using GIS tools.

Why use GIS in forest management?

The management of forest management activities requires the mastery of information and tools related to GIS. From the delimitation of the forest to be managed to the extraction of logs, the use of GIS tools is essential to respect, plan and follow the activities of the forestry exploitation.

Who organises the training?

The Centre de Recherche d'Enseignement Spécialisé en Agriculture (CRESA Forêt-Bois), created in 1997, is a professional training school in the Central African sub-region. We offer our students from various backgrounds (national and international) training in natural resource management, land use planning, forestry development, etc.

Who can attend the training?

The course is open to professionals and students working in the environmental sector, particularly in the

field of forestry and natural resource management. Anyone for whom the training would be of professional use can apply for the course.

What are the benefits for me?

At the end of the course, learners will be familiar with the theoretical concepts related to forest

management and will gain practical experience in making maps related to forest management.

What is the focus of the training?

This course will cover the following topics

• Mastering the process for the implementation of GIS in the forestry sector
• Mastering the regulations surrounding the development and use of maps in relation to forest management
• Become familiar with GIS tools (GIS software interface and GPS handling)
• Master the geo-referencing technique
• Develop a survey plan for a management inventory
• Produce a parcel map of a FMU (Forest Management Unit)
• Make the cartographic dressing

When and at what time will the training take place?

The training will take place between 12 and 16 July 2021 at CRESA Forêt-Bois (Yaoundé -Nkolbisson), starting at 08:00 and should end at the latest at 16:00.

What are the practical arrangements?

Participants must :

• Send your CV and cover letter in PDF format by email with the subject of the email SIG4CRESA21 to tumentap@yahoo.com with a copy to sptchakounte@gmail.com before 07 July 2021. Selected candidates will be contacted by email 01 days after the closing of the call for applications;
• Pay the training fees of 50,000 CFA francs (fifty thousand CFA francs) on the first day of the training. These fees will be allocated to the training room, the data set, the practical training, the course material, the coffee break and the training certificate;
• Bring a laptop with at least 3 GB of RAM.

NB: In case the candidate is unable to attend the training due to unavoidable circumstances after the payment of the training fee; CRESA will not refund the training fee nor organise a make-up season.
