The Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity is a one-year, non-residential fellowship program offered by the George Washington University. The first cohort of fellows was the class of 2017.

The Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity program is based at the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity. The Institute was renamed in 2019 to honor Fitzhugh Mullan, MD, and his lifelong commitment to social justice, health equity and health workforce policy reform. Dr. Mullan joined GW in 1998, and in 2015, founded the GW Health Workforce Institute along with Dr. Polly Pittman. The Institute was created to further research and education in health workforce equity. It is also the home of the Beyond Flexner Alliance, a national movement to promote social mission in health professions education founded by Dr. Mullan.

The Program
One year U.S./global fellowship based at the George Washington University in Washington, DC
Next Program Dates: June 2021 – April 2022
Open to early-mid career leaders involved in work related to health
10 U.S and 10 international fellows per year

Individuals who:
  • Want to become global leaders in the elimination of health disparities
  • Are early to mid-career
  • Are currently engaged in health-related work
  • Are currently in leadership or a position that has potential for leadership
  • Value diverse perspectives
  • Enjoy working in groups
Selection
  • Fellows will be selected based on a demonstrated prior commitment to health equity and leadership potential. Applications will be accepted from all countries. Fellows must be actively working in a field related to health.
  • The program will build and support a linked group of global multidisciplinary leaders equipped with the technical knowledge, skills, and network to advance health equity in their communities and institutions. The program will select 10 U.S and 10 international fellows per year.
The fellows will be expected to:
attend 4 in-person convenings throughout the year = a 5 week time commitment
participate in the online curriculum, that includes 1) biweekly online 90 minute classes, 2) individualized coaching, 3) peer mentoring, and 4) team-based learning = 12-16 hours/month

Please note that all educational experiences and travel expenses related to participation in the fellowship will be covered by the program.

Program Element

The program will:

  • blend in-person and online learning to build comprehensive knowledge of national and global health disparities
  • enhance fellows’ capability to address these disparities through exposure to content experts and visits to programs and institutions pioneering positive change
  • provide personalized leadership training curriculum that emphasizes practical approaches to creating change
