About the programme

Established in 1964, the African Development Bank is the premier pan-African development institution, promoting economic growth and social progress across the continent. The Internship Program is part of a wider Talent Management Framework that helps the Bank deliver on its Ten-Year Strategy. Participants are selected on a competitive basis according to the Bank's business needs.

The program has two main objectives: to give students the opportunity to acquire professional and practical experience at the Bank, and to build a pool of potential candidates for future recruitment.

Applicants should note that the internship does not guarantee immediate employment with the Bank. It opens doors and places your profile in the recruitment pool, but it is not a promise of a job.

Young Africans pursuing this opportunity may also be interested in the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Leadership Fellowship Program and the YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship, both aimed at developing the next generation of African leaders.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have reached the age of majority in their country of nationality and be no more than 30 years old at the start of the internship.
  • Be currently enrolled in a master's level degree program at a recognized public or private higher education institution, or have obtained such a degree within the past year.
  • Be nationals of an AfDB member country.
  • Provide a school enrollment letter or a copy of their degree.
  • Be fluent in at least one of the Bank's working languages (English or French).
  • Be able to use standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access); knowledge of SAP is an advantage.
Two points work in favour of Cameroonian applicants: French alone is enough, English is not mandatory, and the remote option means you can complete the internship without leaving the country or applying for a visa.
Master's enrolment is a strict requirement. If you are not there yet, Unicaf offers partial scholarships for online Master's degrees you can study from anywhere in Africa while you keep working.

Eligible fields of study

Interns are selected from fields within the Bank's Job Families, aligned with its Ten-Year Strategy and gender strategy:

  • Agriculture, Human Capital, Engineering, Investment
  • Operations management and programming, Sustainability, Procurement
  • Delivery and Performance Monitoring, Risk Management, Finance
  • Capacity Development, Governance, Natural Resource and Knowledge Management
  • Economics, Statistics and Data Management, Human Resources Management
  • Information Management Technology, Real Estate Management and Services
  • Translation and Interpretation, Communication, Legal
  • Corporate Governance and Advisory Functions, or any other field the Bank deems relevant

Special consideration is given to students working on projects with a direct bearing on the Bank's mission.

Two constraints to plan for. The internship is authorized only once per candidate, so there is no second attempt. And for the on-site option, air travel and upkeep remain at your own expense — the monthly stipend covers day-to-day living once you are there, not getting there.

Remote interns must have access to a personal computer, a reliable internet connection and a suitable working environment.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online, together with a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae. Only complete applications are considered. The Bank runs two internship sessions per year; this call is for Session 1 of 2027, open for 15 calendar days from 28 September to 12 October 2026, with selected interns starting in January 2027.

Entrepreneurially minded candidates can also explore the Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Entrepreneurship Fellowship for additional opportunities.
