Helen Keller International is an international non‐governmental organization whose mission is to save the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged by combating the causes and consequences of blindness and malnutrition. We do this by establishing programs based on evidence and research in vision, health, and nutrition. Established in 1915, HKI maintains its Headquarters in New York City, with Regional Offices in Senegal and Phnom Penh to support 22 country offices in Africa and Asia.

Since the 1990s, HKI‐Cameroon has been working to establish sustainable evidence‐based approaches to enhance health and nutrition, improve education for the disabled, and expand access to eye health services for Cameroonians, particularly women and school-aged children. Helen Keller International-Cameroon’s programs are integrated at all levels of the government health and education structures by helping to develop its human resources and infrastructure, conduct needs assessments, analyze local context to inform program design and implementation, train personnel, provide basic equipment and medicines, deliver services if needed, and monitor program progress and evaluate program impact.

Helen Keller International Cameroon is seeking a suitable candidate for the position of Communication Officer, based in Yaoundé, who will perform the following tasks:

  • Duration: One-year renewable

Dimension of the role:
Under the supervision of the Country Director, the Communication Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing the communication strategy of the Cameroon office. This will include:
  • Strengthen communication around the activities carried out by the Cameroon office;
  • Give a better national and international visibility to the actions of the Cameroon office;
  • Develop and implement a communication plan;
  • Contribute to the establishment of an effective partnership with the media by facilitating exchanges with the latter;
  • Ensure good knowledge management
Description of specific tasks:
Strengthen communication about the activities of the Cameroon office:
  • Ensure the tasks of communication focal point regarding the various projects contained in the program portfolio of the office;
  • Produce and disseminate a periodic communication bulletin on the implementation of the various activities in collaboration with the program managers;
  • Strengthen the communication capacities of partners and program staff;
  • Improve the national and international visibility of the Cameroon office's activities:Provide support to programs for communication activities;
  • Ensure the coordination of media coverage of relevant actions, following the guidelines of program managers;
  • Provide support to program managers in the implementation of awareness activities defined in the action plans of the various projects;
  • Develop and implement a strategy for the visibility of the Cameroon office's actions through different channels (social networks and other dissemination spaces).
  • Develop and implement the Cameroon office's communication plan:
  • Ensure the development and implementation of the communication plan for the visibility of the actions of the Cameroon office;
  • Update the country office communications strategy and associated work plan. The strategy and work plan include: an environmental and stakeholder assessment; objectives; target audiences; messages and media mix; resources; specific actions, activities and products; impact monitoring and evaluation; success and opportunity for improvement; and ongoing refinement of the strategy.
  • Provide support in the creation of tools, key messages and communication materials for the Cameroon office (e.g., templates for communication materials - fact sheets, presentations, press releases - and guides for creating these materials).
Contribute to the establishment of an effective partnership with the media by facilitating exchanges with the media:
  • Develop, maintain and update the media relations contact list and database.
  • Establish, document, review and refine the process of communicating with media contacts, including press conferences and events, publication of media materials.
  • Ensure timely and accurate dissemination of information to media, national committees, NGOs, field and other appropriate audiences.
  • Identify, develop, distribute and evaluate a variety of materials in a variety of appropriate formats. Ensure or improve the quality and relevance of country-specific communications materials, activities, processes, and messages to the press, partners, and public.
  • Collaborate with the media through activities such as organizing project site visits, facilitating photo and television coverage, and making appropriate use of web and traditional media.
  • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials and share results and findings.
  • Develop, maintain and update contact list and partner database.
  • Assist in establishing, documenting, reviewing and refining the process of collaboration with partners, including meetings, joint projects, information sharing.
  • Ensure and improve the quality, consistency and relevance of country-specific communication materials, activities, processes and messages shared with partners.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen partner capacity through appropriate communication training, access to information, and knowledge sharing.
  • Produce communication pieces for project flagship activities;
  • Manage content for news clippings and broadcasts on civil society activities in Cameroon;
  • Facilitate the flow of information to the media;
  • Develop and strengthen the partnership between the Cameroon office and the media;
  • Participate in capacity building of the media in the area of Nutrition, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and Eye Care


Knowledge Management.
  • Ensure the organization, collection, dissemination and production of communication materials;
  • Synthesize and transform information into knowledge that can be shared with a broad group of users internal and external to Helen Keller International;
  • Write and edit knowledge, support and communication materials;
  • Master the use of electronic networks as effective knowledge sharing tools;
  • Contribute to documenting good practices and lessons learned in the implementation of project activities at the country level;
  • Perform any other duties required by the supervisor and program coordinators.

Required Profile
  • At least a Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, public relations;
  • Have a perfect mastery of computer tools and office software (Microsoft pack);
  • Experience in the field of international NGOs is an additional asset
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Responsible, multilingual, able to work independently, able to position self within the organization.
  • Ability to be a creative team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, content management systems and social media platforms (Word, Excel, Photoshop, Quark Express, Page Maker, Adobe, other NICT tools, etc.);
  • Good writing skills;
  • Have a sense of initiative, teamwork, prioritization, autonomy, ability to work under pressure, flexibility;
  • Be bilingual (French and English).
