The Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships 2026-2027 are now open for applications. Each year, the Heinrich Böll Foundation grants approximately 1500 scholarships to Undergraduate, Master's, and PhD students of all subjects and nationalities, pursuing degrees at German universities, universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), or universities of the arts (Kunst-/Musikhochschulen). This is one of the most prestigious fully funded scholarships in Germany for international students.

• Fall 2026 intake: 15 July 2026 to 1 September 2026
• Spring 2027 intake: 15 January 2027 to 1 March 2027

About the Heinrich Böll Foundation

The Heinrich Böll Foundation is a German political foundation affiliated with the Alliance 90/The Greens party. It funds approximately 1500 students each year across all academic disciplines and nationalities. Scholarship recipients are expected to have:

• Excellent academic records
• Strong social and political engagement
• Active interest in the Foundation's core values: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self-determination and justice

Important: The Heinrich Böll Foundation only accepts online applications. Written proof of German language proficiency is required (minimum: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang DSH Level 2 or TestDaF Level B2).

Selection Criteria for the Heinrich Böll Scholarship

The Heinrich Böll Foundation's selection procedure for scholarship applicants consists of three stages:

1. Written application: Submission of application documents, including a personal reference on your social commitment and an expert reference from a university lecturer (or, for new students, a schoolteacher). The expert reference, preferably in a sealed envelope, may be submitted with the application or sent separately by the referee.
2. Interview with a liaison lecturer, usually held at your university or near where you live (telephone interviews may also be conducted).
3. Selection workshop in Berlin, consisting of a one-to-one interview and a group discussion.

At each stage only a small group is selected to advance to the next. Candidates are informed in writing of the outcome at each stage.
