The France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship is now accepting applications at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle for the 2027-2028 academic year. Funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, this programme allows the best international students to pursue a Master's degree or a doctorate in France.

Scholarship holders receive a monthly allowance of 1,181 euros at Master's level and 1,700 euros at doctoral level, on top of international airfare, health insurance, housing search assistance and tuition fee exemption. Sorbonne Nouvelle accepts applications in languages, literature, arts, media, humanities and social sciences.

About the Eiffel scholarship

The Eiffel scholarship programme is run by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. It helps French institutions recruit the best international students at Master's and doctoral level. Several universities issue their own call under this scheme — our roundup of all Eiffel scholarship calls for applications lists every participating institution.

At Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris 3), the offer covers languages, literature, arts and media, and humanities and social sciences.

Fields of study covered

Sorbonne Nouvelle does not offer programmes in science and technology, economics and finance, accounting and audit, or law. Applicants in those fields must apply through a different institution.

At doctoral level, the scholarship can be split into three stays of at least six months each over a total period of 36 months.

Campus France also covers international travel, health insurance and housing search assistance. Holding French government scholarship status exempts you from tuition fees at public institutions — a saving that applies on top of the monthly allowance.

Eligibility requirements

• Hold foreign nationality only
• Master's: born after 31 March 1997 (29 years old at most)
• Doctorate: born after 31 March 1991 (35 years old at most)
• Hold an overall average above 15/20 across all subjects
• Have at least a B2/C1 level in French
• Submit a single Eiffel application, to a single institution
• Have never applied to the Eiffel scholarship at the same level before
• Not hold another French government scholarship, an Erasmus+ grant or an AUF grant
• Doctorate: apply in the first year, under a joint supervision or co-direction agreement with a partner foreign institution

Two rules eliminate applications outright. First, one file to one institution only: applying to two universities automatically disqualifies you. Second, at Master's level, students already enrolled in France are not eligible. Candidates studying abroad are also given priority.

The 15/20 average and the B2/C1 French requirement set the bar high. If leadership programmes are closer to your profile, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Leadership Fellowship Programme and the YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship are worth considering alongside this one.

If the 15/20 average, the age limit or the single-application rule puts this out of reach, you can also earn an international degree online while staying where you are: Unicaf offers partial scholarships for Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral programmes, with no age cap and no grade threshold of that order.

Required documents

For all applicants

• CV in French or English (1 to 2 pages)
• Degree certificates and class ranking, or a signed rank certificate from the programme director
• Career plan linked to the chosen programme (1 to 2 pages)
• Transcripts for the last three years
• Copy of passport
• Language certificate, where applicable

For doctoral applicants, in addition

• Thesis proposal (1 to 5 pages)
• Thesis funding plan
• Signed joint supervision or co-direction agreement

The rank certificate is the document applicants most often fail to produce. It must be signed by the director of your programme, so allow several days to obtain it — especially if your institution is closed over the holiday period.

How to apply

1. Contact the International Affairs Office (DAI) to confirm that your chosen programme is eligible.
2. Prepare the complete application file.
3. Send the file to the DAI between 1 October and 1 November 2026.
4. Shortlisted files are forwarded by the university to Campus France.
5. Successful candidates are contacted directly by Campus France in spring.
