Main purpose of job:


The British High Commission (BHC) is the official representation of the British Government in Cameroon and provides non-resident representation to Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

The Defence Section Driver will be an integral part of the Defence Team, responsible for providing direct transport, and working closely with colleagues to deliver a pro-active, customer focused service

The primary duty is to provide transport services for staff and visitors of the Defence Section, to and from assigned destinations within Yaoundé and other regions of Cameroon in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner observing all road traffic rules and post security regulations. You will also courier post and other deliveries around Yaoundé. Flexibility is a key asset: tasks can come at short notice, sometimes in urgent and stressful situations. This role is a visible face of the Defence Section, both to visitors (including VIPs), and very senior government officials, and other dignitaries. We expect positivity, politeness, proven interpersonal skills and good personal presentation and hygiene.. There will be occasional travel, by road, to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. This role is also expected to fulfil administrative duties as may be required to support the effective running of the Yaoundé office and Transport operations.

Roles and responsibilities:

Transport Services – 50%
  • Drive staff and visitors to meetings and functions within Yaoundé and Cameroon. Work in partnership with the team and/or client if unexpected changes occur and keep the customer informed at all times.
  • Conduct airport runs to pick up/drop off BHC staff and visitors. Liaise with airport officials as necessary.
  • Frequent out of hours working, with associated compensation
  • Undertake journeys to other regions within Cameroon, and beyond into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, as necessary
  • Perform all duties in line with post security regulations
  • Complete accurate journey record sheets for all journeys in official vehicles
  • Adhere to Cameroonian traffic laws and regulations at all times
  • Ensure customer’s safety at all times to the best of your ability and work in partnership with the Transport Manager should an incident occur
Vehicle Maintenance and Management – 30%
  • Keep accurate records of vehicle mileage and fuel consumption
  • Perform daily inspections to ensure that all official vehicles are road worthy and in good working order. Ensure vehicles are well maintained and report any defects. Duties regular services or repairs runs and performing pre-trip inspections before each drive
  • Clean official vehicles ensuring they are kept tidy and parked in a secured area`
  • Check that all vehicle equipment and tools are secured safely and are functioning correctly
  • Ensure that vehicles are prepared, fuelled and secured in advance of VIP visits. Play key role in planning for incoming senior visitors, and for all BHC trips outside of Yaoundé
Administrative Support – 20%
  • Provide administrative support for the day to day running of the Defence Section
  • Update transport related data and maintain other records as may be delegated by the ADA
  • Familiarise, understand and adhere to the MOD/BHC’s Transport Policy
  • Report to the ADA; attend weekly Corporate Service Department meetings
  • Perform ad hoc duties that may include delivery of documents/letters to the MFA and other organizations and assisting with duties other than transport related functions
  • General administration duties such as updating personal leave records, responding to email, reconciliation of Corporate Credit Cards within the agreed timelines, expense claim forms, etc.
  • Occasionally substitute for BHC drivers during peak periods

  • Experience driving around Cameroon
  • Experience working for an embassy, international organisation, NGO, or expatriate personnel in the sub-region
  • Qualifications for driving Civilian Armoured Vehicles
  • First aid qualifications
