What the programme covers
The certificate has six online courses designed by Carnegie Mellon engineering professors. They are split into two tracks.
The perspective and context track has two courses: "Artificial Intelligence — Past, Present and Future" and "AI and Machine Learning in Africa".
The technical track has four courses: Python for AI, Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning, Machine Learning Essentials, and Applied Generative AI.
Each course has 14 or 15 lessons of about three hours each, so roughly 45 hours per course. CMU-Africa expects at least five to six hours of work per week.
You earn a digital badge for each course you finish. After all six, you receive a certificate you can share and that employers can verify.
Who can apply
The programme targets early-career learners looking for internships or entry-level jobs, mid-career technical professionals, and undergraduate students.
You should have:

Mistakes to avoid
- Confusing this certificate with the CMU-Africa master's degrees. Those are separate programmes with their own fees and process.
- Applying without the maths and programming basics. Python for AI and the machine learning courses assume them.
- Waiting for the last day. The deadline time zone is not stated, so submit early.
- Paying anyone to apply. The course is free for qualified applicants.
- Planning to study only on a phone, or on a weak data plan.
