What the scholarship covers

The UTS is a partial scholarship. The university gives you an amount between €3,000 and €22,000 for the first year, and you decide how to spend it. Tuition fees are not paid for you.

If your programme lasts two years, you may receive the same amount again for the second year. You must have an average grade of at least 7 out of 10, and at least 50% of your credits (ECTS), at the end of the third quarter of year one.

About 28 master's programmes qualify, including Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Business Administration, Psychology and Sustainable Energy Technology. Programmes at the ITC faculty and the pre-master are excluded.

Here is the part most websites leave out: the real cost. For 2027-2028, tuition for non-EU students is €18,720 or €22,320 a year, depending on the programme. The university estimates living costs at about €1,300 a month, which comes to roughly €15,600 a year.

That makes a total of about €34,000 to €38,000 for one year. Even the highest award of €22,000 does not cover everything. The university says you must be able to pay the remaining costs without difficulty, so plan your funding before you apply.

Who can apply

  • You hold a non-EU/EEA nationality. Check that your country appears in the list on the official page.
  • You have been admitted, even conditionally, to a qualifying UT master's programme starting in September 2027.
  • You were among the best 5 to 10% of your graduating class at your home university.
  • You have an Academic IELTS score of 6.5 (6.0 in speaking) or a TOEFL iBT score of 90 (20 in speaking).
  • You have not already graduated from the University of Twente, and you are not a current UT student.
  • You meet the Dutch entry visa conditions, if they apply to you.
The top 5 to 10% rule is strict. The official page asks applicants to be realistic about where they actually stand, so be honest about your ranking before you spend time on the file.

Documents to prepare from Africa

For the scholarship form itself, the official page only asks for your student number and your admission letter. Most of the work is in the master's admission file.

  • Your bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts.
  • Your IELTS or TOEFL result. Book the test early, because test centres in many African cities fill up fast.
  • Proof of your class ranking, if your university can issue it.
  • Your passport.

If your documents are in French, prepare certified English translations. Ask your university for transcripts early: in many African universities, it takes several weeks to get them.

How to apply, step by step

  • Step 1: choose a qualifying master's programme and apply for admission at the University of Twente. For most UT scholarships, you must apply for admission at least two months before the scholarship deadline.
  • Step 2: wait for your admission decision. It can take up to 8 weeks.
  • Step 3: once you have your admission letter and student number, fill in the scholarship form linked on the official University of Twente Scholarship page.
  • Step 4: wait for the result, then start the visa process if you are selected.
Admission comes first, and it takes time. Because the decision can take up to 8 weeks, you need to apply for the master's programme by early February 2027 at the latest. Apply in March and you will still be waiting when the scholarship form closes.

The scholarship application itself is free on the official site. The master's admission may involve an application fee.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying for the scholarship before you have been admitted. You need your student number first.
  • Applying for admission in March. The admission decision can take 8 weeks, so you will miss the scholarship deadline.
  • Thinking the UTS is a full scholarship. It is not.
  • Choosing an ITC programme or the pre-master, which are excluded.
  • Applying with an IELTS score below 6.5, or a speaking score below 6.0.

Successful UTS applicants can also check the Kipaji Scholarship, which has its own requirements. For other options, see the Eric Bleumink Scholarship in the Netherlands, the Erasmus Mundus EMMIR master's scholarship or the Eiffel Scholarship at Sorbonne Nouvelle. If the remaining costs are too high, the online degrees offered by Unicaf let you study from home.
