What the programme covers
EMMIR (European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations) is a two-year joint master's degree delivered by eight institutions across Europe, Africa and Asia.
The course begins in Oldenburg, Germany, then moves to Stavanger, Norway. In the third semester, each student takes a module and an internship with a partner institution: Nova Gorica, Prague, Accra, Mbarara, Johannesburg or Kolkata. The fourth semester is dedicated to the dissertation. Classes start on 1 September 2027.
There are three student statuses. Scholarship holders receive €1,400 per month, with health insurance and university fees covered. Non-fee-paying students pay no programme fees but fund their own living costs. Fee-paying students pay €4,500 per semester.
Who can apply
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent in a migration-related field: social sciences, history, cultural studies, education sciences, law, economics, development studies or journalism.
- A final grade of at least C+ or the equivalent.
- For the scholarship, a degree completed before 20 December 2026. A final transcript showing the grade is accepted.
- A most recent degree obtained less than 5 years ago. Otherwise, you must explain your return to study.
- Knowledge of migration studies, intercultural relations and research methods, evidenced by coursework, dissertations or internships.
- No previous Erasmus Mundus joint master's scholarship.
English is mandatory. A waiver is possible if English is an official language of your country, or if you have studied or worked in English. Otherwise, you need a recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS, valid for two years.
If you are also considering leadership and professional development routes, see the YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Leadership Fellowship Programme.
Documents to prepare from Africa
Everything is uploaded online as PDF files: valid passport, CV, a one- to two-page motivation letter, degree certificate and transcripts, and proof of English proficiency.
All documents must be in English. A degree written in French must be accompanied by an official translation, meaning one stamped by a certified translator.
You do not send recommendation letters. You are only asked for your referees' email addresses.
How to apply, step by step
- Step 1: Create an account on the eMundus platform using a Gmail or Yahoo address. The university system does not work with Outlook or Hotmail.
- Step 2: Complete the form in English, with your name written exactly as it appears on your passport.
- Step 3: Write the section on your knowledge of the field in 480 characters maximum.
- Step 4: Tick your funding options. This choice does not affect your score.
- Step 5: Submit at least 48 hours before the deadline. Once sent, no changes are possible.

- Spelling your name differently on your passport, your degrees and the application form.
- Waiting for the notification before starting translations and certifications.
- Applying as a non-scholarship student without being able to block €11,208 in a bank account, as required for the German visa.
If France is also on your list, read our article on the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship in France. And if leaving is not an option right now, an online master's with a partial Unicaf scholarship is another route worth considering.
